A 34-year-old woman who was found guilty of killing her two children was on Friday, February 24, 2023, slapped with a 17-year jail term.

Flossy Cherono confessed that on the night of July 9, 2019, she killed her two children Ivy Chelagat, 11, and Beryl Chepchumba, 7, to protect her relationship with her newly found lover in the hopes that he would marry her.

She admitted that she took away her children’s lives by strangling and slashing them using a machete before disposing of their bodies in a pit latrine.

A post-mortem report tabled before the court also revealed that the children were strangled to death before being chopped into pieces.

“The children had been strangled to death while the other bled to death due to a deep cut on the head,” the postmortem report reads in parts.

While delivering his judgement, Justice Reuben Nyakundi of the Eldoret court expressed disappointment and shock at the mother’s confession.

On its part, the prosecution affirmed that Cherono’s acts were heartwrenching and disturbing.

“It is disturbing to believe that a mother would commit such a heinous crime against her own children who trusted her. It is ironic that the person who was supposed to care for the innocent children by offering care, protection, and love became the predator,” the state counsel noted.
