35 students from various high schools along with five other people survived death after a boat they were travelling in hit a rock near the Lamu port area on Sunday night.

Kenya Red Cross officer Lamu Abdul Hakim Abdu said that the students had come from their villages in Ndhau Island, Kiwayu Island and Makkoni Island.

They were returning to school onboard the MV UVUVI 1 boat.

The boat is reported to have hit a rock on the Indian ocean, after which its brakes.

The passengers were stranded for three hours before the Red Cross officers arrived at the area and rescued all 40 people alive.
