4 killed as lorry rams roadside traders, vehicles in Meru

Four people have died, while 16 others sustained injuries following a road accident at Riverland in Meru town.

The accident occurred after a lorry reportedly veered off the road, hitting several vehicles and roadside traders.

North Imenti OCPD Hassan Bashir confirmed the incident, revealing that emergency teams had been dispatched to the scene.

The injured were rushed for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital Morgue.

Following the accident, Meru Deputy Governor Linda Kiome Gitonga issued a message of condolences to the families of the bereaved while wishing a speedy recovery to those nursing injuries.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this heartbreaking incident. To the families who may have lost their loved ones, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt condolences during this painful and difficult moment,” he stated.

“There are no words adequate to ease the pain of losing a loved one, but please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.”

He also appealed to the public to avoid spreading unconfirmed information regarding the accident and await verified intel on the full extent of the tragedy.

“I wish to assure the people of Meru that our emergency response teams from the Department of Special Programmes, the Department of Health, and our fire and rescue services are on the ground, working tirelessly to rescue those affected, save lives and provide the necessary emergency assistance,” he stated.

“Every life matters, and our immediate priority is to save lives and ensure that everyone affected receives urgent attention.”
