Active citizen and prominent ‘Niko Kadi’ mobilizer Allans Ademba has been arrested.

Taking to his X account, the popular activist shared that he had been apprehended at Ol Kalou and was taken to the Ol Kalou DCI offices.

“I’ve been arrested. Niko Ol Kalau DCI…” he tweeted.

Ademba did not immediately provide further details of the arrest or specify where exactly he was being held.

Before the arrest, Ademba had shared photos of his presence in Ol Kalou, claiming that only those who voted in 2022 were being allowed to vote in the ongoing by-elections.

According to his earlier tweet, newly registered voters were not allowed to vote under IEBC rules.

He wrote: “Ol Kalau residents have turned out in large numbers to vote. NOTE: Only those who voted in 2022 are being allowed to vote. The newly registered voters are not allowed to vote as per the IEBC Rules.”

As early as 7.37am, Ademba had also shared a video of voters lining up at the AC polling station.

The photojournalist shot to national fame back in March after kicking off the widely-popular #TukoKadi online campaign, a digital mobilisation program aimed at registering en masse for the 2027 General Elections.

On Tuesday, March 17, he chaperoned hundreds of Kasarani residents to register as voters at the IEBC centre, within the D.O’s offices in Kasarani sub-county.

Buoyed by the popularity of the challenge, Ademba officially unfurled the #TukoKadi campaign, seeking to take the movement away from the internet and right into the IEBC offices, a classic example of Kenyans’ insistence on taking matters to the ‘ground’.

Wrapped in warm jackets, Maasai shukas and hats against the chilly morning weather, early voters in Ol Kalou turned out to elect a new Member of the National Assembly following the death of David Njuguna Kiaraho.

The closely watched contest is widely seen as a key test of  political influence in the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Polling opened at 6.00 am and is scheduled to close at 5.00 pm, with voters in the queue by the official closing time allowed to cast their ballots.
