Kenya Met: Nairobi, Trans Nzoia among counties expected to receive rainfall

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has forecast rainfall in parts of Nairobi and Trans Nzoia counties between Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18, even as dry conditions are expected to prevail across most parts of the country.

In its latest weather outlook issued on Thursday, July 16, 2026, the department said dry conditions are likely to prevail in most regions. However, some areas in Bungoma, Kisii, Kericho, Kisumu, Nyamira, Migori, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Trans Nzoia, and Nairobi counties are expected to receive rainfall.

Additionally, rainfall is also expected in some parts of Embu, Nyeri, Meru, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Siaya, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Narok, Kakamega, and Busia counties.

“Dry conditions expected across the country. However, some parts of Bungoma, Kisii, Kericho, Kisumu, Nyamira, Migori, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Trans Nzoia, and Nairobi counties may receive rainfall,” Kenya Met stated.

“Some parts of Embu, Nyeri, Meru, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Kisumu, Siaya, Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Kakamega, Trans-Nzoia, Busia and Bungoma counties may receive rainfall.”

The department noted that most of the rainfall is expected during the afternoon and evening hours, although some areas could receive morning showers.

Cold condition

In addition to rain, the weatherman also forecast intermittent cool and cloudy conditions over parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kitui, Machakos, Kajiado, and Makueni counties.

“Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kitui, Machakos, Kajiado, and Makueni Counties,” Kenya Met added.

Strong wind

Kenya Met further warned that strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) are expected over parts of Lamu, Kilifi, Garissa, Wajir and Marsabit counties.

“Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Lamu, Kilifi, Garissa, Wajir and Marsabit Counties,” Kenya Met added.

Residents in the affected counties are advised to keep track of weather updates and take the necessary precautions, particularly in areas expected to experience rainfall and strong winds.

Temperature

Despite the expected rainfall in many regions, northern Kenya will continue to experience high temperatures.

Mandera is forecast to record the highest daytime temperatures of up to 36°C on Thursday and Friday. Garissa, Wajir and Turkana are also expected to remain hot, with maximum temperatures ranging between 33°C and 36°C.

Temperatures in the coastal region are expected to remain warm, with daytime highs ranging between 26°C and 31°C.
