Speaking during a meeting with Mathioya and Kangema Constituency delegates on Wednesday, Gachagua dismissed claims that he was seeking to have politicians abandon their parties in favour of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), saying his focus was on growing the party’s support while allowing allies to strengthen their own outfits.
“I have never said that anyone should dissolve their political party. I am saying people should join DCP. I hold meetings every day,” Gachagua said.
He attributed DCP’s growing popularity to sustained grassroots mobilisation by the party’s leadership.
“DCP has become popular because Riggy G and his team are working hard,” he said, referring to himself by his nickname.
Gachagua urged leaders to actively market their respective political parties instead of relying on media appearances, saying political success would only come through sustained campaigns at the grassroots.
“When I hold a meeting and leave, you should come after me and market your own party. Let everyone sell their own party instead of only complaining at press conferences,” he said.
He also challenged Party of National Unity (PNU) leader Peter Munya over the party’s performance in the recent Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, arguing that stronger grassroots campaigns were necessary to improve electoral fortunes.
“You, Munya, and PNU did not campaign in Ol Kalou. You got 28 votes. If you don’t campaign, how do you expect to get votes?” Gachagua posed.
At the same time, the former deputy president called for greater cooperation among opposition parties, saying they should compete freely for elective seats while pursuing a common position on the presidency.
