Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi stepped in to support struggling comedian Stellah Jemutai Koitie, popularly known as Jemutai Comedian, after her heartfelt cry for help on social media caught his attention.
The meeting took place on August 31, with photos from Sudi’s Facebook post showing the two shaking hands, conversing indoors and outdoors, with Jemutai reportedly holding a wad of cash the politician had given her.
Jemutai’s public struggle
The comedian had been going through a rough patch following a poorly attended show in Eldoret that left her deeply discouraged.
The turnout was so disappointing that she took to social media to share her pain before eventually deactivating her accounts altogether, a move that alarmed fans and drew wider public attention to her situation. Sudi said it was that raw, public display of vulnerability that compelled him to reach out. “Following her emotional appeal on social media, I was moved by Stellah Jemutai Koitie, alias Jemutai Comedian – Chibambe, who had even deactivated her social media accounts,” the MP wrote.
Sudi’s pledge to Kenyan creatives
Beyond the immediate financial support, Sudi indicated that his visit was not just a one-off gesture. The Kapseret legislator said he intended to use his platform to uplift creatives across the country, giving them a sustainable way to earn from their art.
“As a patron, we are determined to create a platform for our creatives so they can earn a decent living and build a foundation for the next generation,” he said.
He added that the two also discussed ways to grow stand-up comedy and the wider creative arts sector in Kenya, suggesting that Jemutai’s situation had opened a broader conversation about the welfare of local entertainers.
Jemutai is one of Kenya’s well-known stand-up comedians, celebrated for her relatable humour and energetic performances.
Her willingness to publicly share her struggles resonated with many Kenyans who understand the precarious nature of a career in entertainment, particularly outside Nairobi.
