A 12-year-old Tanzanian schoolboy who had told relatives he felt unloved and was going hungry has been found dead, sending shockwaves through his community in Arusha.
Dickson Jonasi, a Grade Six pupil at Ilboru Primary School in Arumeru District, Arusha Region, was discovered lifeless on the morning of August 31, 2026, days after making deeply troubling remarks to members of his family about feeling abandoned and deprived of food.
What Dickson Told His Aunt Before He Died
His aunt recalled that the boy had told her plainly, “I will die because my father does not love me; my grandmother and my father deny me food.”
She said she tried to dissuade him, warning that taking his own life would lead him to hell and urging him to come to her every evening for food.
On the morning he died, she noticed something was different. Unlike every other school day, Dickson flatly refused to attend class, a detail that in hindsight she found deeply troubling.
“In my opinion, his father does not love him as his son,” she said, reflecting on the conversations she had with the child in the days leading up to his death.
Family member Zakayo Lukumai described what he characterised as severe mistreatment of the boy, particularly from his stepmother.
He alleged that the stepmother had once declared, “It would be better for me to give food to a dog than to give it to this boy.”
Father Denies Mistreating His Son
Dickson’s father pushed back against the allegations, saying the child had been living under the care of his grandmother ever since he separated from his first wife three years ago.
He denied that his son had been mistreated or denied food under his roof.
The contradiction between the father’s account and those of the aunt and Lukumai has left the family divided over what Dickson’s final days truly looked like behind closed doors.
Dickson’s death has left his school community in Ilboru and the wider Arumeru District in mourning, with questions still lingering over the welfare of children caught between separated parents and blended family arrangements.
