Dennis Ombachi Hosts Eliud Kipchoge on Iconic Balcony, Marathoner Cooks Ugali

Two of Kenya’s greatest sporting names reunited in the most unexpected setting, not a stadium or a track, but a kitchen and a balcony.

Dennis Ombachi, the former Kenya Sevens rugby star turned celebrated food content creator, welcomed marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge to his iconic balcony on Sunday, 6 September, for a cooking session that quickly captured the attention of fans across social media.

What happened when Ombachi and Kipchoge united?

The pair last shared the same stage at the Rio 2016 Olympics, both representing Kenya on the world’s biggest sporting platform.

Ten years on, Ombachi reflected on how much has changed, noting in his caption that the two were now in “completely different chapters” of their lives.

This time around, the reunion was not about medals but about mursik. Ombachi put together an ambitious spread: butter orange and herb poached carrots with a lemongrass and kaffir lime leaf-infused mursik dressing, creamy managu, grilled rump steak, and ugali.

He garnished the finished plate with edible flowers, joking that he wanted to “give athletes their flowers while he still can.” His young children added plenty of personality to the video.

His daughter, Sasha, made it clear she had been pulled away from her cartoons against her will and wanted nothing to do with cooking, only eating.

His son, meanwhile, threw himself into the action, charring carrots on the grill and insisting that mursik was the secret behind Kipchoge’s superhuman pace.

What did Kipchoge say after meeting Ombachi?

Towards the end of the video, Kipchoge stepped in to help stir the ugali before joining the voice-over segment. When he saw the finished plated meal, he admitted the mursik presentation was not what he had expected walking in.

“I think that is what life is all about, looking at what you have and believing you can do more with them. That is also my goal in running, building communities. No human is limited, no ingredient is limited,” Kipchoge said.

Ombachi tied the cooking session to a broader message, drawing a parallel between Kipchoge’s mission to build communities through running and his own ambition to tell people’s stories through food, where “tradition meets free will, and the only limit is what we’re willing to imagine.”
