An elderly man’s anguished cries as fire destroyed his home in Gachie have resonated deeply with Kenyans online, with a video of the moment drawing an outpouring of sympathy across social media.
The fire broke out in the Mbwa Kali area of Gachie, Kiambu County, reducing several iron sheet houses to ash and leaving a number of families without shelter or belongings.
Residents suggested the blaze may have started from a gas cylinder explosion in one of the homes, though investigations into the cause were still ongoing at the time of reporting.

Clutching his blue cap in his hands, he stretched his arms towards the burning homes and cried out repeatedly, his wailing audible above the chaos.
Those around him scrambled to douse the fire using soil, while others worked to salvage whatever iron sheets had not been fully consumed by the flames. Despite their efforts, much of the property in the affected area was lost.
The raw grief visible in the man’s face and movements struck a chord with viewers, many of whom felt that the footage captured something that words alone could not convey.

The video triggered an immediate wave of concern online, with many commenters expressing the wish that someone had physically comforted the elderly man in his moment of despair.
