US-based Kenyan content creator Owen Githanga, widely known as Kenyan American, has broken his silence from a hospital bed after a terrifying health scare that nearly cost him his life.

In a raw, unfiltered TikTok video filmed inside what appears to be a hospital room, Githanga addressed his followers directly while wearing an oxygen nasal cannula around his neck and surrounded by visible medical equipment.

His voice strained and his breath short, he told viewers he had been diagnosed with sepsis, a life-threatening condition, and that a doctor had warned him he may not have survived had he waited another two hours before seeking emergency care.

His voice strained and his breath short, he told viewers he had been diagnosed with sepsis, a life-threatening condition, and that a doctor had warned him he may not have survived had he waited another two hours before seeking emergency care.

“The doctor told me, had you waited another two hours, you would have gone into sepsis. We would have lost you,” he said, expressing deep gratitude to God for still being alive.

Githanga’s road to the hospital

The content creator explained that it was a series of difficult events that eventually led to his hospitalisation. His son had been admitted to the ICU in Colorado, and the stress of managing that situation while keeping up with daily financial obligations, including mortgage payments, insurance, food and other bills, overwhelmed him completely.

With his partner unable to work, Githanga said the weight of covering all household expenses on his own became unbearable.

He admitted that as he lay in hospital, he stopped thinking about how far behind he had fallen on bills and instead focused on simply getting better.

Despite the gravity of his situation, Githanga took a moment to thank the many people in his community who rallied around him, singling out individuals he referred to as D, Y2K and others who had shown up for him during his darkest days. “I’m touched beyond measure,” he said, his voice breaking.

Recovery will take time

Githanga was candid about the long road still ahead of him. He acknowledged that returning to his normal routine, including creating content, would not happen overnight.

“It will take time before I get back to where I was,” he said, adding that he needed to rebuild his strength gradually.

He also touched on how isolating hospitalisation can be, describing the daily grind of IV drips, antibiotics, injections and breathing support as something few people talk about openly.

“Nobody ever said how lonely it is to be hospitalised,” he said.
