A photo of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua enjoying a round of golf in the United States has set social media alight, with Kenyans debating whether he was wearing a bulletproof vest beneath his polo shirt.
The image, shared on Thursday, September 24, shows Gachagua in a mauve checkered polo shirt, beige trousers, a beige cap bearing the word “VALLEY,” and white golf gloves on both hands.
Did Gachagua wear bulletproof in the US?
He is smiling broadly alongside two women on a well-manicured golf course, complete with a cart path, fairway and distant houses visible in the background.
His wife, Dorcas, is dressed in a white Adidas polo shirt and a beige baseball cap, while the other, a blonde woman in a light-pink Under Armour V-neck, rounds out the trio.
What caught users’ eyes was a noticeable bulge beneath Gachagua’s shirt, which sparked immediate speculation.
The photo was originally posted by @OtengaSiauu, who wrote:
“Gachagua spotted in the US wearing a bulletproof jacket while playing golf.”
The claim quickly divided opinion in the comments. Some users were genuinely concerned, while others found the whole thing amusing or were quick to offer alternative explanations.
@Casandrafaith25 asked:
“What is he afraid of?”
Meanwhile, otienooloo91162 offered a more tongue-in-cheek take:
“Is that a vest or his tummy?”
Not everyone was convinced it was security gear.
@andysitian was firm:
“That’s not bulletproof but a back support belt.”
Patomaxw echoed the scepticism, writing:
“Not a bulletproof jacket. It is a belt.”
Whether the bulge is a security measure, a medical belt, or simply the way his shirt fits, the photo has done little to dim the former deputy president’s smile or the curiosity of those watching his every move from afar.
