A scheduled execution in Tennessee descended into crisis on Wednesday evening after death row inmate Christa Pike survived two doses of a lethal drug and was rushed to hospital, her attorneys confirmed.

The attempt took place at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville at approximately 20:00 local time. Pike, 50, was administered two syringes of the barbiturate pentobarbital, yet remained alive throughout.

Her legal team moved swiftly, filing an emergency motion to halt the proceedings while they were still underway, stating that Pike had lost consciousness but retained a heartbeat and was audibly snoring.

One of her lawyers confirmed to the BBC that Pike was subsequently transported to hospital, where she received what they described as life-saving medical care.

What Tennessee’s Execution Protocol Says

According to the Associated Press, Tennessee’s execution procedure includes a secondary set of drug syringes for use if the first set does not prove fatal.

However, the protocol does not address the scenario in which a person remains alive after both sets have been administered.

During the course of the evening, the curtain separating the execution chamber from the witness room was drawn twice, and media representatives were at one point asked to leave the facility.

The execution had itself been the subject of intense legal wrangling in the hours before it began, ultimately reaching the US Supreme Court, which ruled that the lethal injections could proceed.

What crime did Christa Pike commit?

Pike was convicted and sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer. She was 18 at the time of the killing, which she carried out alongside her then-boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp.

The two had encountered Slemmer, who was 19, at a job training programme for troubled young people, where they subsequently attacked and killed her.

Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, had been among those who pushed for the execution to go ahead. After Wednesday’s events unfolded, she told NBC News simply: “It was a mess.”

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee issued a statement following the failed attempt, announcing that he had commissioned “a comprehensive, third-party review to determine exactly what occurred.”

He also confirmed that the final execution scheduled for the year would not proceed as originally planned.
