Aliko Dangote: 5 things you didn’t know about his billionaire lifestyle

new5nuke

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and founder of Dangote Group, has built a multibillion-dollar fortune through cement, sugar, fertiliser and the massive Lagos oil refinery.

But behind the businesses and billions is a lifestyle that is more restrained than the typical image associated with the world’s wealthiest people.

Here are five things you may not know about Dangote’s lifestyle.

Bought a jet at 22

Dangote bought his first private aircraft when he was just 22 and a half years old.

Speaking in September 2026 during the launch of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery IPO, he recalled the purchase while criticising wealthy Africans who own private aircraft without investing in businesses that create jobs.

Interestingly, Dangote said he is now comfortable flying commercial, reflecting his changing attitude towards luxury and wealth.

Same house for years

Despite his enormous fortune, Dangote has said he has lived in the same Nigerian home for about 36 years.

He has also said he does not own a residential property outside Nigeria and prefers staying in hotels when travelling abroad.

Dangote has previously explained that owning homes in other countries can take attention away from his businesses in Nigeria.

His family life has also been described as relatively simple, with Dangote saying he and his three daughters are “very, very down to earth.”

Once owned 25 cars

Dangote’s younger years were considerably more flashy.

He has been linked to a collection of about 25 luxury sports cars and has spoken about driving Porsches and Ferraris at high speed between Lagos and Kano.

He eventually stopped the high-speed driving after the birth of his second daughter.

His garage still features high-end vehicles, including a Bugatti Veyron. However, Dangote has said he follows a rule of buying only about two new cars every eight years.

On some weekends, he has also been known to dismiss his driver and take the wheel himself around Lagos.

Ksh1.3 billion cash test

One of the more unusual stories about Dangote’s wealth involves a huge amount of cash.

According to profiles about the billionaire, he once withdrew $10 million, equivalent to about Ksh1.3 billion, simply to confirm that the money was actually his.

He took the cash home in the boot of his car, looked at it and returned the entire amount to the bank the following day.

The unusual episode offers a glimpse into the scale of his wealth before he became one of Africa’s most recognisable billionaires.

Works long hours

For Dangote, the biggest luxury may not be expensive cars or private aircraft but the ability to build businesses.

He has long been described as someone who works extremely long hours, with reports putting his working day at up to 18 hours.

He has also spoken about sleeping for only a few hours, highlighting the demanding routine behind his business empire.

While his wealth has allowed him access to almost every luxury money can buy, Dangote’s lifestyle has increasingly been associated with business, investment and philanthropy rather than constant displays of wealth.

His journey from buying a private jet in his early 20s to saying he is comfortable flying commercial shows how his attitude towards wealth and luxury has evolved over the years.
