Senior Lecturer Dies after Meeting with Young Woman in Hotel, University Responds: “No Denying”

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, reportedly collapsed and died inside a hotel room following an alleged encounter with a 21-year-old woman on October 5, 2026.

The incident took place at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, within the Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, at around 8pm.

Uwuigbe had allegedly checked in with the young woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob, before the situation took a fatal turn.

Edo State Police Command spokesperson speaks

According to the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, Uwuigbe sent Jacob out to fetch water shortly after their encounter. When she returned to the room, she found him lying lifeless on the floor.

“On October 5, 2026, at about 8pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old woman, Angela Defa Jacob.

He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room,”Ikoedem said.

Investigations commence after lecturer dies in hotel

The police spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday, October 8, 2026, that three people had been taken into custody: the hotel owner, the hotel manager, and Jacob herself.

Investigations into the precise circumstances of Uwuigbe’s death were ongoing, Ikoedem added.

His remains were deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

University’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika speaks

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was indeed a member of staff but stressed that the events had no connection to the institution.

“We are not denying that he was our staff member, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” Aladenika said.

Police have not yet disclosed the cause of death, and the results of any post-mortem examination had not been made public at the time of reporting.
