A Busia County family is reeling from a devastating double loss after a mother and her son died within days of each other, forcing their loved ones to bury them together in a single, sorrow-filled ceremony.

The family, from Khulwano Village in Bunyala North Ward, Budalang’i Constituency, had barely come to terms with the mother’s passing when tragedy struck again.

Son Dies Before His Mother Is Buried

When news of his mother’s death reached Nairobi, her son made the journey home to Budalang’i to support the family and help with burial preparations.

He never made it to the burial. Just two days before his mother was due to be laid to rest, he too passed away, leaving relatives and community members utterly devastated.

Faced with the unimaginable task of planning a second burial while still grieving the first, the family took the difficult decision to postpone the mother’s ceremony. Rather than burying them separately, they chose to lay mother and son to rest on the same day, at the same family home in Khulwano.

The joint burial took place at the family’s home in Khulwano Village, drawing relatives, friends and neighbours who came together to mourn and support those left behind.

The atmosphere was one of profound grief, as the community grappled with the weight of losing two members of the same family in such quick succession.
