Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has traded the parliamentary floor for a recording studio, dropping a reggae love song that takes aim at partners who enjoy relationships without putting in any real commitment.

The track, titled Hit and Run, was released on Thursday, October 22, and uses humour to speak to a dating experience many Kenyans will recognise — investing emotionally in someone whose intentions were never genuine from the start.

All you need to know about Njeri Maina’s new song

The Hit and Run music video was filmed at a resort and along the beach, giving the production a light, breezy feel that matches the reggae rhythm underneath its pointed message.

In one memorable scene, Maina rides a quad bike while a man playing a would-be suitor chases after her, a visual that neatly captures the song’s core idea: one person pursuing what they can take, while the other tries to stay ahead of the emotional damage.

Rather than delivering a lecture, Maina wraps her caution in comedy, encouraging listeners to spot the red flags early and protect their hearts before they are fully invested.

The video also features two of Maina’s political colleagues in surprisingly entertaining roles. Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango appears as a wealthy man, while MCA David Mathenge plays a watchman, adding a dose of humour that works well against the reggae backdrop.

Their involvement gives the release an unexpected twist, bringing together three leaders from the same county in a project that has nothing to do with legislation and everything to do with matters of the heart.

This is not Maina’s first time behind a microphone. The 32-year-old trained lawyer and human rights advocate previously explored music during her university years under the stage name Carola Jayne, long before she became a prominent parliamentary voice for young Kenyans.

Hit and Run marks a return to that creative side of her identity, offering audiences a different way to engage with a politician who is typically associated with legal advocacy and parliamentary work.

Maina has not publicly spoken about her current relationship status.
