A young student at the Eldoret National Polytechnic has lost her life in a devastating road accident that cut short what should have been an ordinary school day.
Caroline Jebet was travelling by motorcycle along Uganda Road in Eldoret’s Central Business District on Friday when a tipper truck allegedly lost its brakes and ploughed into the motorbike near Uzuri Supermarket.
She sustained fatal head injuries and died at the scene.
The motorcycle operator survived the crash but was left in serious condition and was transported to hospital, where he reportedly remains critical.
A Life Lost Before Her Exams
According to eyewitnesses, Jebet was on her way to the institution to sit her examinations when the accident occurred.
The circumstances have added a particularly painful dimension to the tragedy, as her fellow students and staff grapple with the news that she never made it through the door.
The tipper truck driver allegedly had no control over the vehicle by the time it struck the motorcycle, with witnesses indicating brake failure as the likely cause of the crash.
Students Plan Candlelit Vigil in Her Honour
In the wake of her passing, students at the Eldoret National Polytechnic have come together to organise a candlelit vigil to celebrate Jebet’s life and pay their respects.
The procession is scheduled for Thursday, November 5, starting at 5:00 PM. Participants will gather at the institution’s main gate before walking to the spot on Uganda Road where the accident happened, where candles will be lit in her memory. The group will then return to the institution grounds near the cafeteria to conclude the vigil.
The gesture reflects the sense of loss felt across the polytechnic community, where Jebet was known as a student in the midst of her academic journey.
