Charlene Ruto’s white wedding in Mwanza had all the hallmarks of a fairytale celebration, but it was her vows that truly stopped the room.
Standing before her husband, Tanzanian entrepreneur Isaya Yunge, at Malaika Beach Hotel on Friday, 6 November, the first daughter delivered a speech so personal and so unexpected that guests could barely hold back their emotions.
The moment was captured on video and has since spread widely across East Africa.
Charlene’s 16-year prayer
Dressed in a sparkling white gown, Charlene looked directly at Isaya in his cream-white suit and told him something none of their guests could have anticipated.
“I started praying for you 16 years ago when I was in my first year of high school. I didn’t know you. I had never met you,” she told him.
She explained that the prayer started during her Form One year, rooted in Matthew 17:20, the Bible verse about faith as small as a mustard seed being able to move mountains.
She had no face, no name, no idea who she was praying for. She only knew she was praying for the man she would one day marry.
Benny Hinn, prophecies, and a list
Charlene also revealed that over the years she had received several private prophecies about her future husband.
She mentioned that Pastor Benny Hinn had publicly prayed for Isaya to come into her life quickly during a crusade in Nairobi in late 2024, a moment that had already gone viral at the time. On her wedding day, she finally gave it context.
During a period she described as her “faithless hour,” Charlene said she decided to write down a detailed list of the qualities she hoped to find in a husband, prayed over it, and believed she had been thorough.
Then came the line that brought the tent to its feet.
”In every sentence I wrote, I put a full stop. But God put a comma. When I finished at number 15, he continued to number 16, 17 and beyond,” she said.
She went on to tell Isaya that he had surpassed every single thing she could have requested, dreamed of, or imagined.
“You are more than I could ever have asked for, dreamed for or imagined,” Charlene told her husband.
From Kilgoris to Mwanza
The couple had already formalised their union through a Kalenjin traditional Koito ceremony on 8 August, held at the Ruto family’s Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris, Narok County, before proceeding to the white wedding in Tanzania.
For the many who had watched Charlene publicly ask for prayers at the Benny Hinn crusade two years earlier, her wedding vows brought the full story into focus.
Sixteen years of prayer, one list, and a God who, as she put it, kept adding commas where she had placed full stops.
