Thomas Tayebwa, the Deputy Speaker of Uganda Parliament has raised concerns over increasing cases of homosexuality in schools.

During a plenary session on Tuesday, January 24, Tayebwa said that male students live in fear of being sodomised.

“I talked to one student personally and he told me that in one of their schools, you cannot move around in the compound at night. He is from a male school, one of the prominent male schools. He told me that, ‘you fear being grabbed and sodomised’,” he said as reported by the Monitor.

While calling on Parliament’s Committee on Education to probe the matter, the Deputy Speaker added that the increase in homosexuality is not only in learning institutions.

According to Tayebwa, there are recruitment centres in the country and if the matter isn’t dealt with urgently, the next generation will be destroyed.

“Some of the children and parents are dying in silence. So, the Committee on Education, this is a matter you have to give urgent priority. It is an issue that we must tackle head-on without fearing anyone,” he said.

He called on the Education committee to explore ways of tackling the issue through more funding or conducting patrols.

On the same note, Tororo District Woman MP Sarah Opendi raised concerns on the availability of Non-Governmental Organisations in Uganda that are in support of homosexuality.

In August 2022, Uganda banned Sexual Minorities Uganda (Smug), a prominent LGBT rights group.

The group was banned on grounds that it was not properly registered under the National Bureau for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
