A 23-year-old mother who is alleged to have killed her one-and-a-half-year-old son was arraigned at a Kiambu court on Monday, February 20.
The suspect identified as Jane Wamucii, however, did not take a plea as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made a miscellaneous application seeking to detain her in order to complete their investigation.
The investigations officer constable Evans Onyango from Lari DCI sought 14 days to complete recording statements from witnesses.
Onyango told Limuru Senior Principal Magistrate Jared Magori that they also want to take her to the hospital so that she can undergo a mental assessment.
The detective told the court that, Wamucii went to her parent’s home on February 13, this year who enquired about her son’s whereabouts.
However, her parents were not content with her explanations that she had left the toddler with a friend and suspected that she had lied to them.
He said that the parents reported the matter at Kimende police station where the suspect gave a different version of the story, forcing the officers to refer the case to DCI.
“After thorough interrogations, they admitted that she had killed her son and took us to a pit latrine where she lives and where she had dumped the body,” he said.
Onyango further said that they called the fire brigade experts who retrieved the body and they took the body to Uphome Funeral Home where an autopsy will be conducted.
Magistrate Magori accepted the DCI’s request and ordered Wamucii to be detained at Lari police station, as the detectives finalize their probe.
The magistrate also ordered the case be mentioned on March 8 for further directions.
