The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday arrested the Tana River chief finance officer in possession of Ksh2.7 million at Malindi Airport on her way to Nairobi.

According to a source at the commission, got an intelligence report from its coastal regional office that Mariam Bunu had been intercepted at the airport with some Ksh.6 M in cash that she could not account for.

Officers were then dispatched to the airport where they seized documents showing that she was travelling to Nairobi for “official duty.”

After conducting a further probe, it was discovered that Bunu was in possession of undeclared cash amounting to Ksh.2.7 million.

She was processed and later released on a cash bail of Ksh.100,000 pending further investigations.

“It is suspected that the amount was corruptly obtained from Tana River County,” a source at  EACC says.

EACC has therefore launched investigations against Bunu for possible embezzlement of public funds, abuse of office and/or dealing with suspect property.

They will also conduct a lifestyle audit on Bunu to ascertain whether she is in possession of unexplained assets.
