The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) at Eldoret University on Thursday, March 2, 2023, joined Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) in a peaceful demonstration demanding former Vice Chancellor Prof Teresa Akenga to vacate office and allow for the assumption of office by the new acting Vice-Chancellor.
Led by Dr Nyaberi Mogaka the Joint chair of UASU and KUSU Eldoret University chapter, the leaders have castigated the former Vice Chancellor for holding on to office despite the lapse of her leadership tenure at the institution.
“We want to ask the former vice chancellor to vacate office with immediate effect and allow the new acting vice chancellor to provide leadership into the institution without undue influence. We ask the chancellor and the Council Chair to intervene with the urgency that this matter deserves,” Dr Mogaka said.
“We would not wish to witness a situation where leaders overstay in office until they are forced out by the people. We will not allow “mugabeism” to take place in this noble institution,” he added.
KUSU branch secretary Robinson Kibet has urged the former Vice Chancellor to hand over three of the public vehicles she is currently using against the law as she has since ceased being the holder of the position of Vice Chancellor at the Institution.
Prof Akenga was appointed in June 2013 to serve at the institution as the varsity’s Vice Chancellor.
