One person has died after the walls of a gold mine caved in on him in Siaya County.

Area chief George Odhiambo said the incident happened at Siandha village in Ramula, Siaya county.

The deceased, identified as George Otieno Odula, was prospecting for gold when the shaft buried him alive.

His fellow miners rushed to the scene in efforts to rescue him but their efforts were futile.

“The operation lasted about six hours. We tried to rescue him in vain. We later retrieved his body,” a resident said.

The body of the deceased was moved to Yala sub-county hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
