A debt officer attached to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices at JKUAT towers in Nairobi was on Wednesday arrested for soliciting a Ksh.50,000 bribe.

Ismail Ahmed Mire is said to have demanded a bribe from a complainant in order to amend a wrongly accrued VAT tax penalty.

The complainant reported the matter to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on March 8, 2023 upon which the graft watchdog commenced investigations.

EACC detectives accompanied the complainant to JKUAT towers on March 15 where he met Mire and gave him a partial bribe of Ksh.40,000 after a brief conversation.

He was arrested immediately after receiving the bribe, according to EACC, which added that the KRA official was found in possession of the said sum after a quick body search.

He was then ferried to the Integrity Centre Police Station where he was processed and released on cash bail pending conclusion of investigations into the incident.
