The highly-anticipated club friendly match between record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia and Tanzanian top-tier side Azam FC that was planned for Nairobi on Sunday has been called off.

Gor said in a statement on Tuesday that Azam ‘s decision had stemmed from grave security concerns triggered by the volatile political situation in the country.

“Gor Mahia FC and Azam FC had planned an international friendly match on Sunday, March 26 in Nairobi. Due to unavoidable circumstances and the prevailing political uncertainty, the two clubs have decided to cancel the match,” the statement read in full.

Azam took to their social media page to confirm the development.

“We have canceled our trip to Nairobi, Kenya to play with Gor Mahia this Sunday, due to security reasons,” the post read.

“Gor Mahia invited us to the international friendly game scheduled for Nyayo Stadium in the city.”

Gor were keen to use the encounter to polish their act ahead of the second leg of the Kenyan Premier League that has been halted due to the ongoing international break.
