An autopsy report has revealed that William Mayenga, the third-year Maseno University student who was allegedly shot dead by police during the nationwide Azimio la Umoja One Kenya protests on Monday, died out of a bullet injury.

Dr Dixon Mchana, Western region’s forensic pathologist, on Wednesday said the bullet entered Mayenga’s body via the neck, thereby affecting the spinal cord and leading to his death.

“I conducted the post-mortem before family, IPOA, Maseno University representatives and I recovered a bullet header from the neck of the late William Mayenga,” Dr Mchana said shortly after the exercise.

Everline Miruka, the deceased’s mother, said the family has agreed to transfer the Mayenga’s body from the Coptic Mission Hospital morgue in Maseno to their home in Kisii to enable the family to begin burial arrangements.

“The only comfort I have had is the company of Maseno University students and some lecturers but nobody else has come to assist us,” she stated.

“My son wasn’t a bandit, he was killed and I want justice…nisinyanyaswe!”

Joel Miruka, an uncle to the late Mayenga, said the family has been struggling to raise money for post-mortem and transport back to Kisii for burial.

This comes after State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed earlier sought to assure the public that the police service has since launched a probe into the killing of the student.
