Tension remained high in Kibra on Tuesday morning, as residents woke up to take stock of the aftermath of Monday’s anti-regime protests.

Scores of people could be seen rummaging through the rubble in an attempt to salvage what a deadly fire that broke out Monday evening had left behind.

Among those counting huge losses is a local businessman only identified as John whose business; a hardware and a pub were razed to the ground.

According to the businessman, the club, from where he eked out a living had stock worth nearly Ksh.4 million as of Monday.

On Tuesday, all that remained were ashes, iron sheets and stones… and a new apprehension of how he will take care of his family.

“Stock ya club ilikuwa ni Ksh.3.9 million, hii ndio ilikuwa investment yetu ya maisha,” John told Citizen Digital on Tuesday.

“Hapa ndio tunasomesha watoto, kila kitu ni hapa, sasa vile hii imechomeka, I do not know where to start, hata chakula ya kupelekea watoto hakuna,”

At the PCEA church, the trail of destruction is evident; shards of glass are strewn across the church’s floor, as are the ashes of benches that were torched during the attack.

According to Reverend Sarah Muriithi, the PCEA parish minister in Kibera, the church was set on fire by goons on Monday.

A learning institution attached to the PCEA church was also torched and vandalised. The church is yet to quantify the losses incurred during the attack.
