President William Ruto has promised that unga prices will go down from next week.Failure to lower unga prices a deal breaker

“You will see new prices starting next week. We have to balance to make sure even what we import does not hurt our farmers. These people wearing sufurias on their heads should leave me alone to plan everything. They had a chance to plan but failed. They are the ones who watched as prices hit Ksh230,” Ruto said.

“Let them come to Parliament and talk to their colleagues as we plan development with Wavinya (Ndeti).”

Failure to lower unga prices a deal breaker

On April 12, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna termed Ruto’s failure to lower unga prices as a deal breaker in the proposed bipartisan talks between the opposition and the government.

In a statement, Sifuna highlighted three issues among them food prices that could see talks between Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party and Kenya Kwanza collapse.

“The refusal to do anything to lower the price of Unga is a deal breaker,” stated Sifuna.

Ruto’s announcement comes a day after Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga announced that the opposition would resume anti-government protests after the month of Ramadhan.

“Mazungumzo yafanyike na maandamano sambamba. Tunasubiri Ramadhan iishe. Dawa ya moto ni moto (Let dialogue run parallel with the protests. We are waiting for the end of Ramadhan),” Raila said.

Despite both teams unveiling teams for bipartisan talks, they have been unable to kick off the talks following hard stances taken by the two sides.

Azimio is set to hold a public rally dubbed People’s Baraza at the Kamukunji Grounds on Sunday, April 16, 2023.
