Police officers in Laikipia County on Wednesday impounded and destroyed more than 10,000 litres of illicit brew at Maina Village on the outskirts of Nyahururu town.
During the 8-hour operation, the officers had to grapple with a fair share of challenges among them rough terrain and a herd of elephants that was grazing next to where most of the brewing operators were found.
Nyahururu Division Assistant County Commissioner, Vicky Munyasia said the brew, locally known as Kangara had infiltrated the area, regretting the effects the health it had on consumers.
Munyasia, who led a team of police officers, chiefs and sub-chiefs in destroying the apparatus, regretted that the brewer, who had been flushed out of Thompsons Falls a month ago, had now set base at Judea area.
She said that the brew had been prepared from chick mash and rotten maize which was a great threat to the health of the consumers.
Responding to a clarion call by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Munyasia noted that the government is committed to eliminating illicit brew and to fight alcoholism, drugs, and substance abuse in the region.
Area Senior Chief Joseph Muraya said the team was tipped last night that the brewer had relocated to the area, prompting the raid this morning.
He called on the youth, men, and women to avoid the brews that have continued to wipe generations.
The incident comes in the wake of the fight against illicit and counterfeit alcoholic drinks, by the Ministry of Interior, which is said to infiltrate the region, especially during the campaign period.
