Parents from Kiunguni Primary School in Tharaka Nithi County have staged a protest over the poor state of the school, calling for the transfer of the headteacher.

The parents marched around the institution on Tuesday, complaining about mismanagement and ignorance from the school management.

They accused the headteacher of cutting down trees and selling to charcoal sellers, and his deputy for shutting down their complaints.

“Our children are failing and we cannot transfer them anywhere else, this is our school… We have land that we lease every year to raise money to build classrooms, we already brought building materials but no progress is seen,” Douglas Murithi, a parent, told Citizen Digital.

The deputy headteacher is also said to have chased away reporters who had arrived at the school to cover the protest.

“We want the headteacher transferred. The deputy has also proven to be complicit and should follow him as well,” another parent, Jacinta Kagendo, said.

Efforts to speak to the Tharaka South Education coordinator bore no fruit.
