A sombre mood engulfed Milima Mitatu village in Molo, Nakuru County on Thursday after a four-year-old boy mysteriously died after being dropped off at an Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centre in the area.

The boy’s mother, Mary Wanjiru Njuguna, told Citizen Digital that she escorted her son to the learning centre at around 8 am, as had been her routine, only to receive a call two hours later informing her that her child had fallen ill and had been taken to Molo Sub-County Hospital.

The boy’s family claimed that they were later told that the deceased, while playing with his peers during tea break, climbed a barbed wire perimeter wall surrounding the institution but unfortunately lost his footing.

The balaclava that the boy was wearing reportedly got stuck to the barbed wire fence strangling the boy in the process as his peers watched on helplessly.

A good Samaritan is said to have heard the children’s cries for help, quickly making his way to help the boy who had reportedly already lost consciousness.

According to the boy’s kin, teachers were having tea when the incident occurred.

Police reports recorded at Molo Police Station however allege that the child died of an underlying medical condition, a claim his mother refutes.

Molo Sub-county Director of Education Sylvester Musikoyo said authorities are still investigating the matter to unearth what exactly transpired during the incident.
