Two people are still trapped for over 15 hours now, after a truck they were traveling in lost control and hit the guardrails along Thika road forcing the cabin to plunge into the Ruiru river.

The truck driver was saved after the Wednesday accident at 5:00 p.m. and was taken in a serious condition to Ruiru hospital.

According to a police report, the truck was headed for Nairobi when it struck the guardrails, causing the trailer head to separate from the body before it veered off the road and dropped into the deep river.

Divers and rescue teams from Kiambu County and Ruiru police Station spent the better part of Wednesday night trying to rescue the other two passengers, but their efforts were frustrated by a heavy downpour.

Ruiru police boss Alex Shikondi says the rescue mission will continue today and that they are hopeful that the two will be rescued.

“The rescue team is back to the river to continue with the rescue mission, I hope it will be successful,” Shikondi said.

Traffic was halted for more than three hours at the busy Thika Super Highway for the better part of the evening after the detached trailer blocked the road.
