A middle-aged man was Tuesday arraigned before the Kisumu Magistrates Court for setting up a radio station without a valid licence.

Austin John was charged with four counts of establishing a radio station without a valid licence, providing radio broadcasting services without a valid licence and two other counts.

Appearing before Justice Joan Wambilianga, Ms John pleaded not guilty to all four charges and was released on a bond of Ksh.100, 000.

The prosecution has lined up nine witnesses to testify on September 6.

Radio station

To set up a radio station in Kenya, one needs a license from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK). Depending on the desired type of broadcaster, one pays for either a public broadcasting licence, commercial or private broadcasting service, or community broadcasting services.

Additionally, one also needs to apply for a license from the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) if one intends to be playing copyrighted music content on the station’s broadcasts.
