Musingu Boys High School’s victory over defending champions Shanderema Secondary to clinch the Kakamega County Schools soccer title on Saturday has rekindled their hopes of national stardom.

Head Coach Brenden Mwinamo said that they were now focused on the Western regional championships that will be staged in Kakamega next weekend.

“We are daring to dream again after being in the cold for over twenty years. We have young lads who are very determined to make us proud,” he said.

Musingu, who were variously regarded as underdogs before the Kakamega County competitions, held on Thursday to Saturday, won all their matches from group stages to mouth-watering finals staged at the Bukhungu Stadium.

It was a revenge of sorts when the youthful Mwinamo beat his former school, Kakamega, where he was forced to exit over accusations that he was not a competent tactician.

The coach dismissed reports doing rounds on social media that they fielded an ineligible player.

“That is balderdash. In fact, we do not have any player by the name of Brian Odiwuor. We knew such allegations would emerge especially after we beat all odds to clinch the title after many had written us off,” said Mwinamo.

“If their accusations are valid then they know what to do. Let them appeal while we prepare for the regionals,” he added.

He pointed out that their main secret lay in behaving like a weak team during their campaigns towards the county championships which saw many dismiss them as underdogs.

The main focus had been on defending champions Shanderema from Shinyalu Constituency, St. Peter’s Mumias Boys from Mumias West and Kakamega High from Lurambi.

Musingu, who represented Ikolomani Constituency, beat Shanderema aka ‘Eagles’ 2-1 in the well-attended finals.

Ikolomani MP Benard Shinali, who witnessed ‘the Scorpions’ bring the title home, expressed his joy and promised to support them prepare effectively for the regionals.

“The scorpions are back as a result of sheer hard work and discipline. I have been very supportive to the team and will continue,” he added.

Former Principal Oliver Minishi, who taught Mwinamo coaching skills while at Kakamega School, also hailed Musingu and expressed his optimism that the team would go all the way to the nationals.
