A myriad of demonstrations are expected to take place in the nation on Wednesday as a number of entities will be taking the streets in protests.
Citizen Digital has complied the protests which were announced to take place on the said date beginning with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition anti-government protests.
The announcement was made by the coalition’s leader Raila Odinga during the Saba Saba protests on Friday, July 7, where he vowed to intensify the demos.
Odinga also criticized the violence that ensued during Friday’s demos where he says his vehicle was damaged by live bullets fired by police.
“The people of Kenya have a right to picket, demonstrate and petition. Article 1 of the Constitution says that the sovereignty in Kenya is vested in the people of Kenya and the people can either exercise it directly or through their elected representatives,” said Odinga.
The second entity set to take the streets is the Long-distance drivers who announced they will protest against the new rules imposed by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to have all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) and commercial vehicle drivers take mandatory re-tests.
The drivers claim that the new NTSA rules require them to undergo a new test for driving trucks, an issue they oppose and hold that it is discriminatory.
In addition, they are complaining about the bad roads in the country and harassment allegations by traffic police officers.
Joining the long-distance travelers are the PSV operators who have similarly aired their frustrations on the re-testing order by NTSA.
Sharing the same frustrations is the Boda-boda operators who will also be taking the streets.
The taxi-hailing industry is also set to take the streets as they claim that the government has not been addressing their concerns.
Among the issues they took issue with are the high fuel prices, pay rates from digital companies and intimidation by traffic police.
