The family of Maina Njenga is demanding to know the whereabouts of the former Mungiki leader who was reportedly arrested by police at his family home in Kajiado County on Wednesday night alongside his two brothers and personal assistant.

Addressing journalists outside the Milimani Courts on Friday, Njenga’s kin insisted that he was wrongfully arrested while adding that the State is violating his constitutional rights by wrongfully detaining him without revealing his exact whereabouts.

“Hakuna mtu anajua Maina alifanya nini; kwani hii serikali imekuwa aje? Ni nini amefanya adhulumiwe? Tunataka kujua yuko wapi na tunataka haki ya Maina Njenga,” one of Maina’s family members said.

“Mtatuambia kwenye yuko. Watu wanaolia hapa ni watoto na bibi wake.”

She added that it was imperative for them to urgently get access to Njenga since his health is apparently deteriorating.

“Maina njenga ni mgonjwa. Jana tulikuwa tunamtafuta tumpelekee dawa; amekuwa mgonjwa. Hata dawa yenyewe hana na hatujui kama anakula,” said Njenga’s kin.

According to Njenga’s father, Stephen Njoroge, during the night of the incident, police officers forcibly entered the home at around 8.00 pm before bundling Njenga, his brothers and his assistant into one of their vehicles.

“This is against human rights. It is bad for police to storm a home, beat people without any reason,” Njoroge said adding that domestic workers at the home were also beaten by police.

On Thursday, Njenga’s lawyer Ndegwa Njiru pitched camp at Wang’uru police station in Kirinyaga, claiming the former Mungiki leader had been detained there.
