Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff, has shed light on the minor delays in finalizing a fresh Formula 1 contract with seven-time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton’s current deal with Mercedes expires at the end of 2023, but both Wolff and Hamilton remain optimistic that a new agreement is merely a formality, pending some finer details.

While rumours circulated about Hamilton’s interest in an ambassadorial role at Mercedes post-retirement, Wolff has clarified that this is not part of the ongoing contract negotiations. Instead, he attributed the delay to simple administrative matters that need resolution.

“We’re not discussing an ambassadorial role for him after retirement, nor is that part of the contract talks,” Wolff conveyed to the media.

“He still has many years ahead as a driver within the team, so it’s just a matter of ironing out some details in the contract.”

Hamilton’s relationship with Mercedes runs deep, stretching back to his younger days at the age of eight or ten when he donned the AMG visor. Over the years, he spent time with McLaren in the Mercedes family before spending a decade with the Mercedes works team, forging an inseparable bond with the brand.

“He’s become synonymous with Mercedes, just as he is synonymous with his illustrious career,” Wolff emphasized.

“We’ve endured numerous highs and lows, facing challenging situations both personally and professionally. But these experiences have strengthened our bond, fostering a relationship built on trust, tough love, and occasional disagreements.”

Such a robust connection has contributed to Hamilton’s unwavering loyalty to the team.

As Formula 1 enters its summer break, the action will resume with the Dutch Grand Prix on 28 August at Circuit Zandvoort.
