Police in Machakos police station are investigating the death of a 23-year-old Machakos University student who was found dead in his rented house in Kiumoni area within Katoloni sub-location.

Confirming the incident, Katoloni area assistant chief Dominic Matheka said he was notified of Peter Mwangi’s death by the deceased’s landlord.

“I received a call from a man who owns rental houses near Machakos University, I to rushed to the scene and was shown the house where the student had died,” the chief said.

Matheka disclosed that information gathered from one of the deceased’s friends shows that the second-year student was battling depression linked to family issues and could have taken his own life.

“According to information we have from those close to him, from Sunday Peter looked depressed and we think it might be linked to separation in his family which did not sit well with him,” Matheka revealed.

The administrator urged landlords within Katoloni, Mwanyani and Muthini areas to be keeping records of all their tenants because a majority of them are students from Machakos University.

According to Matheka, there is a need for the landlords to ensure that they have all records of their tenants like copies of their IDs and contacts of their next of kin.

“I am urging the landlords within my area to keep records of tenants for safety measures, it is important because when they are faced with issues it gets easier to notify their next of kin,” he noted adding that the details are not only useful in deaths but other alarming incidents such as sickness.

The body of the deceased was taken to a local mortuary for autopsy as investigations on the student’s cause of death commences.
