Ms Nancy Indoveria Kazungu, alias Mathee Wa Ngara, the Nairobi businesswoman who police have linked to a drug trafficking cartel, is due to be arraigned in court following her arrest.

Ms Kazungu was arrested on Monday evening by sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and thereafter grilled for the better part of the night.

Ms Kazungu was arrested just a few hours after she moved to court to seek anticipatory bail to stop her arrest.

The businesswoman, through her lawyer Shanice Maingi, told the court that the police was seeking to wrongfully arrest her and to have her charged on trumped up charged.

“I have never committed any crime in Kenya nor have I been involved in any criminal activity in Kenya,” Ms Kazungu said, adding that she did not understand why the police wanted to arrest her.

The businesswoman also accused the police of detaining her two sons for five days without any reason. The two are Eugene Jumba and Hillary Jumbo.

She said her son were arrested to threaten her and subsequently arresting her without following the due process of the law.

The suspect has been on the run since Tuesday, August 14, 2023, when DCI detectives raided a bhang den which is she believed to run. During the raid, the officers seized Sh12.9 million in cash and 26 sacks of bhang.

Police also arrested Ms Teresiah Wanjiru, Sheila Withers and Ms Kazungu’s two sons. It has since emerged that Ms Wanjiru was mistakenly arrested and she is planning to sue the DCI for the wrongful arrest.
