Senate committee probing Shakahola deaths visits DCI’s forensic lab

The Senate Ad hoc committee has conducted a fact-finding session in the ongoing Shakahola probe at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) National Forensic Laboratory.

In a statement by DCI, the session was held today, with the committee seeking insight into the laboratory’s functions and its role in supporting the investigation.

Led by Tana River Senator, Hon. Danson Mungatana, the committee was given a comprehensive tour of the DCI National Forensic Laboratory by its Director of Forensics, Mr Johnstone Mwongela.

“During the session, the committee led by Tana River Senator, Hon Danson Mungatana, was taken through the functions of the laboratory and how the critical security infrastructure has so far supported the ongoing Shakahola probe,” the statement read in part.

The visit included a detailed explanation of the laboratory’s various sections, which have played a crucial role in unravelling the intricate details surrounding the Shakahola case.

Present during the tour were several prominent DCI figures, including Director Legal, Mr. Amos Omuga; Director Homicide, Martin Nyuguto; Deputy Director of Intelligence Bureau (IB), Paul Wachira, among other esteemed directors.

The committee expressed their appreciation for the pivotal role that the laboratory plays in solving crimes scientifically. The senators lauded the experts based at this national facility for executing their responsibilities with the utmost professionalism. The DCI National Forensic Laboratory has been vital in piecing together the puzzle of the Shakahola case.

“The committee appreciated the role the laboratory plays in solving crimes scientifically and hailed the experts based at the National facility for discharging their mandate with professionalism,” the statement read further.

Furthermore, the committee was briefed on the challenges faced by these forensic experts while performing their duties at the laboratory.
