Police in Garissa have launched investigations after chaos and mayhem erupted at the county’s assembly on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

During the incident, the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) who had converged at the assembly chambers for a Business Committee meeting fought and vandalized properties. The meeting was halted prematurely in the process.

The Thursday incident occurred when a section of aggrieved members in senior positions showed up at the chambers and began verbally engaging the assembly’s speaker Abdi Idle.

While addressing the press after the incident, Speaker Abdi recounted that he found himself sandwiched between tables at the chambers when the chaos unfolded.

At the time, the opposing MCAs were throwing chairs at him, fortunately, he was rescued by the Sergeant at Arms and whisked to safety. Despite staying out of the vicinity, the MCAs still followed him to his office with a motive to fight him.

“I was sandwiched between the long tables of the chambers. They took the chairs and started throwing them at me as well, luckily, I was saved and whisked through the back door,” he stated.

Ousted Assembly Majority Leader Abubakar Khalif has now asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to conduct investigations and bring the culprits to book.

“What happened in the chambers was unexpected. We want the police to investigate this matter urgently because we suspect the speaker to be behind the chaos. We are calling members of DCI, and EACC to expedite and take this matter as we wait for justice,” he stated.
