A part-time domestic worker has pleaded guilty to stealing $7000 (about Sh1,050,000) from her ailing employer in Nairobi.

Roseline Kahega admitted to the theft charges, an act committed in contravention of Section 268 (1) as read with Section 275 of the Penal Code.

She was accused of stealing the cash and fleeing, but hawk-eyed police officers intercepted her in Kericho County, some 200km from where the crime was committed.

She stole the money belonging to her employer Libin Abdi Mohamed’s house in Eastleigh on October 13, 2023.

Ms Mohammed had raised the money for a surgery she is to undergo abroad.

The complainant who is sick is scheduled to travel to India for surgery.

She had received the money from relatives and friends through international money transfer platforms and kept the funds in her house awaiting the travel dates.

She then hired Ms Kahenga as a part-time cleaner but it appears the employee had other plans.

On the material day, Ms Kahega failed to turn up for work and upon calling her, it turned out that she had switched off her mobile phone prompting Ms Mohammed to confirm that everything was intact in her house when she discovered the money missing.

Ms Mohammed reported the matter to California police station.

The police checked public service vehicles (PSV) booking offices for companies operating the Nairobi Vihiga route after establishing she hails from the county and found out that Ms Kahega had boarded a bus headed towards Vihiga.

The bus had already left Nairobi at the time the police obtained her travel details and the officers sought help from their counterparts in Kericho who arrested Ms Kahega.

She was escorted to Kericho police station where a search was conducted on her and a silver pulse containing Sh10, 000 was recovered from her.

A bus ticket indicating she was travelling to Mbale town was also recovered.

The pulse belongs to Ms Mohamed.

Ms Kahega was placed in custody at the station before she was picked up by officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Shauri moyo offices who escorted her to Nairobi on October 16, 2023.

She admitted the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Mary Njagi.

The suspect was remanded in custody until October 25, 2023, when the prosecution will lay out its case against her and avail the exhibits including the pulse, the Sh10, 000, and the bus ticket before the court before she is convicted and sentenced.
