Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has called on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to provide an alternative premise for hawkers evicted from the Nairobi CBD.
Speaking during a Sunday service at ACK St Monica church in Dandora, Senator Nyamu said that despite the aims to achieve a cleaner capital, hawkers should not be neglected and be treated discourteously.
“It is not wrong. We also love order but you cannot chase away hawkers without giving them an alternative. We must speak about this because if we don’t, the next targeted people will be taxi drivers,” she said.
“We want the government to protect its people.”
She shared the same sentiments on the ongoing land squabbles being witnessed in the nation, including the 1,000 acre land saga in Njiru which has seen many watch their homes being demolished.
The land, owned by the late politician Gerishon Kirima, has been a point of contention amid a court battle which has seen six cases filed over the land ownership.
“I am drafting a bill to compel the government to compensate such people who have gone the process of buying land. I will be at the frontline to talk with Kirima’s family so that they get a truce and also help those living there,” she said.
Surprisingly, a large section of Kenyans welcomed Sakaja’s decision and others read a little mischief in it.
