A Kisumu court on Monday sentenced a man to 20 years imprisonment after being found guilty of vandalizing a Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) transformer.

Polycarp Nyokaye Aringo was facing 12 counts after he was arrested in 2021 for being behind the vandalism of the transformer in Ngere area, Seme Sub-County.

Kisumu Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Hon Ezekiel Obina handed Aringo a 5-year sentence to each of the 12 counts citing that the charges were of serious economic crimes.

He said that instead of the total 60 years the accused will serve the sentences concurrently.

The charges included vandalism of energy installation and infrastructure, unauthorized connection of electrical apparatus, stealing of energy equipment among others.

The offenses are said to have been committed on the night of 4th and 5th October 2021.
