President William Ruto is expected to leave the country to attend the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Ruto, who has been Africa’s point man in the call for climate action, will be advocating for Kenya and the continent’s climate agenda in his capacity as the Chair of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed says in a statement that Ruto plans to emphasize transformative climate action urgently needed to correct the world’s current trajectory.

He will also deliver a statement on behalf of Africa, highlighting the continent’s priorities while building on the historic African Leaders Nairobi Declaration adopted at the inaugural Africa Climate Summit held in Nairobi in September 2023.

“Leveraging COP 28, President Ruto aims to enhance collaboration, share best practices, and advance Africa and Kenya’s priorities on the global climate agenda,” read the statement in part.

The President will participate in the conference from November 30 to December 2 as other 100 global leaders are expected to be in attendance.
The president has in many instances, both on local and international podiums, advocated for comprehensive financial reforms calling on international financial institutions, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), to align with Africa’s developmental and climate goals.
