Flood victims in the Nyando sub-county are decrying the deplorable state of the rescue centre at Nyamasao primary school, where they sought refuge after their homes were marooned by floods.

The locals say they are staring at a humanitarian crisis following the lack of key sanitation services in the camp.

Jane Atieno who is camping with her two children says the government has forgotten their plight and life in the camp is horrible.

Atieno says something must be done urgently to prevent outbreak of diseases such as cholera and even malaria adding that it will be double trouble for the victims.

“There is water shortage here. The toilets are not clean, there is no detergent to clean them, and sometimes we see maggots. We are afraid we could be infected with cholera,” she says.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Atieno called on the national government to fix lasting solutions to the flooding menace as they are tired of moving from their homes during rainy seasons.

“We would like government’s help in building a dyke in our village. We need a permanent solution, we are tired, we can’t even have investments in our homes,” she says.
