Forty-eight girls who were set to undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Kuria region have escaped to the GOSESO Women Network rescue camp in Kuria West sub-county, Migori county to seek refuge.

Speaking to radio Ramogi on Thursday, GOSESO Women Network chairperson Susan Matinde said the girls have been streaming into the rescue camp in the past month.

Matinde said a number of girls ran away from home after they realized that their parents were planning to force them to undergo the cut, adding they are still receiving more girls who are at risk of undergoing FGM in the region

Matinde further noted that they have even received a university student who escaped from home after her family attempted to subject her to FGM.

The GOSESO Women Network chairperson said they are only worried that they may not be able to feed the girls in the coming week, because they have inadequate food in their store.

Matinde has appealed to the county and national government to help them with food and non-food items for the girls.
