The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga has approved murder charges against a police officer linked to the killing of two people at a bar in Nakuru last month.

Police Constable Nicholas Musyoka Musau is accused of shooting four people at Loritas Liquor Club popularly known as Vegas Club in Nakuru on the night of December 12, 2023.

Two women, Ann Maina and Laura Kwasira succumbed to bullet injuries while the two other people identified as Benjamin Kote and Edwin Apungana survived the incident with serious wounds.

The officer attached to Nakuru Central Police Station is said to have fired indiscriminately in the club after a dispute over a bill.

The DPP, in a statement on Wednesday, January 10, said investigations conducted by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) found Musau culpable of the murder of the two victims.

The DPP affirmed that there was sufficient evidence to sustain murder charges against the officer. He will be arraigned at the Nakuru Law Courts later today.

“Having reviewed the inquiry file, the DPP is satisfied that there is sufficient evidence to sustain a charge of murder,” Ingonga said.

“The DPP has therefore directed that the suspect be charged with two counts of murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code today, 10th January 2024 at Nakuru High Court, Nakuru County,” the DPP added.

The DPP further affirmed the directorate’s commitment to working with IPOA to enhance accountability of the men and women in uniform.

“The DPP reiterates his endeavor to continue the coordination, cooperation and collaboration with Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) into the foreseeable future in order to enhance accountability, efficiency and expeditiousness in the prosecution of similar cases within the criminal justice system,” he added.
