Eleven people died have been confirmed dead following an accident involving a bus and a lorry at Othoo area in Nyando sub-county along the Kisumu – Nairobi Highway.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Mwangi has confirmed the incident saying dozens of other passengers were admitted at Ahero Sub-county Hospital and others at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) following the 2:30am accident.

The dead include two women, 8 men and a teenage boy. A total of 53 passengers have suffered injuries as a result of the accident.

Mwangi says the bus, which was heading towards Nairobi, was trying to overtake when it collided head-on with an oncoming lorry killing the 11 instantly.

Both vehicles have been towed to Ahero police station.
